How to start your own blog and bring more eyes to your business.

In 5 easy to follow steps…

Do you want to start a blog but have no idea where to start? It can be really overwhelming to start something new when you’ve got lots of ideas floating around. In this post, I talk about blogging and how to start your own in 5 easy to follow steps…

What is a blog anyway?
A blog is a place on the internet to post about topics on a regular basis. This can take the form of writing, video or images. You don’t have to be good at writing. You just need an idea and a place to put it.

Why is having a blog a good thing for your business?
It can be a great way to show your potential clients how knowledgeable you are about your field - we call this ‘authority’ and it creates trust for your business. If you have your blog on your website, it can also bring traffic over through search engines and backlinks so there are more eyes on you and your services. It can also be a great way to generate content which can then be repurposed into other content.

For example - maybe you want to write a post about your passion for a new programme used in your industry - once you have written your blog post, you could then turn this into a video for TikTok or a carousel for Instagram. The possibilities are endless!

Here are 5 easy steps to follow to get started with your own blog and hopefully take away some of that overwhelm and decision paralysis.

1- You need a theme and a name
Okay, so first things first - you need a blog theme. Why are you starting your blog? Is it so you can talk about how much you love collecting china dogs or maybe your love of nature? Or could it be to talk about your own business journey and tips and tricks for your clients? All this sounds great - so pick a theme and go with it. You can change it at a later date and it’s not set in stone.

Once you’ve got your theme - pick a name. It can be as simple as ‘My business diaries’ or ‘China dog lover’ - don’t overthink, just start. You can always change the name later on if your blog changes.

2-You need a place to publish
Now you need a place to publish. Here are a few different options -
-on your website (great for SEO and bringing more visitors to your site)
-Substack (a great place to post as there’s a whole community of other bloggers to connect with - plus subscribers get it their inbox)
-LinkedIn (publishing articles on LinkedIn is a good way to connect with others)
-Wordpress (for the more advanced internet savvy person although there are templates on there you can use)

3- Customize your blog - make it pretty!
This is your chance to make your blog your own. Most blogging sites now have options to customize by uploading banners or logos. If you are a bit of a technical whizz, you might even want to add custom html or CSS. It is completely up to you.

4-Post your first post
Sometimes, the scariest thing is just starting. Your first post could simply be an introduction to you and your services. If you want to add images, there are plenty of places to get copyright free images from - for eg. Unsplash (with credit). Or you might want to upload your own images - all this is good and unique to you and your business.

4- Promote your post
Once you’ve posted, you can advertise your post on social media or send it to your email subscribers. Get it everywhere so everyone knows you’ve started a blog. Tell friends, family and your internet buddies. You’ve just started a blog - it’s a huge achievement!

5-Stay consistent

Okay, you’ve got the blog, you’ve posted and you’ve promoted. Now, it is the hardest part - you need to stay consistent. Are you going to post every week?

Every two weeks? Or maybe your schedule will only allow 1 post a month. You will need to pick a schedule you can stick to.

Use a project management tool like Trello to keep track of your topic list/plans. This way you won’t feel stuck when it comes to thinking about what you want to write about.

Congratulations - you are now a blogger!

If this has been helpful, let me know in the comments.

Still want to start a blog for your buiness but would rather somebody take care of it for you - I got you.
